Povesti din Bucuresti – Grota Fermecata / Stories of Bucharest – The Magic Cave

Astfel gasim in parcul Carol doi giganti, reprezentand cei 2 frati…

ENGLISH:

I am sure you are wondering what cave is this about, since in Bucharest there is no such thing… Once, long ago, on the place where we can now stroll on the avenues of Carol park, there was a superb building named The Palace of Arts. In front of this building, in the name of art, an artificial cave was set up, where with the help of 3 statues, a tale was told, a sad tale of love based on a legend (it is the legend of Urlatoarea Waterfall). The legend says that there once was a beautiful maiden, with whom 2 brothers fell in love, but scared by their love, the girl chooses to trow herself off a mountain cliff, thus turning into a waterfall. The two brothers, horrified by what happened are forever stunned and locked in stone above her… Thus the Magic cave consisted of the young girl, sleeping the eternal sleep between the two brothers forever watching her…

In the age of communism, lots have changed, the palace of arts is gone and the cave with it. The statues have been kept, but split apart… Thus we din in Carol Park two giants, the two brothers… The statues were sculpted by Dumitru Paciurea and Frederi Storck, each artist placing his mark on one of the brothers and thus on our city as well… The 3rd statue, of artist Filip Marin, representing the young sleeping girl, was moved in Herestrau Park, in the expo flora area, where lots of people admire it daily saying she is „Sleeping Beauty”, but not knowing her true sad tale…
